He forcibly takes her under his control and offers a shocking proposal: Anna must become his wife’s replacement. Furthermore, Rothbart reveals that the only way Anna can return to her world is by bearing a child with someone from this world. Though Anna is reluctant and torn by the moral and emotional weight of his demand, she is pushed by desperation. Rothbart’s son, Svanhild, also plays a key part: he grows attached to Anna, pleading with her, with childlike longing, “I want a mother, Anna.” Faced with an unrefusable condition, Anna ultimately consents to Rothbart’s proposal, despite the painful conditions, the uncertainties ahead, and the sense that any relationship she has here may be doomed from the start.
